The plot involves a young Japanese historian, Toshiro, visiting a French chateau to consult its archives on the French Revolution. There is a portrait of a lady of the time (Chantal Trobert). When he is asleep at his desk she emerges from the portrait into the present. There are also flashbacks to what she suffered at the hands of the revolutionaries in 1789.
